Wembley Aston Villa 2 Man United 1

THE crafty half time fags, the rigid ‘W’ formations, the players’ wages, the brutal tackles, the only televised game of the year.

So different was the 1957 FA Cup final to our showpiece modern day matches that it was used in a wholesale nfl jerseys comparative 2007 BBC documentary called A Game of Two Eras.

Which is why the famous photograph of captain Johnny Dixon being lifted aloft by team mates with the FA Cup raised above his head remains one of cheap nfl jerseys the most enduring images in the club’s proud history.

Villa versus Manchester United on May 4, 1957 will be remembered for two breaks.

The broken record as the claret and blues lifted the cup for a then best seventh time (although sadly, that record has been obliterated by United who now boast 11 triumphs).

And United keeper Ray Wood’s broken cheekbone when he collided with match winner Peter McParland after just six minutes.

McParland’s shoulder charge, when he followed up his own ten yard header by steaming into Wood despite the ball being firmly in the stopper’s grasp, was unremarkable back then.

Indeed, even though Wood lay unconscious on the hallowed Wembley turf, observers, including match commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme, wondered what all the fuss was about.

“That was a fair charge but unfortunately their heads collided and both McParland and Wood are out,” announced the man with the mic, going on to add minutes later that there was “rather silly booing from some of the Manchester spectators every time McParland gets the ball”.

Nowadays, following such a crunching challenge, the aggressor would get their marching orders for violent conduct, while the victim would be whisked off to the nearest A department for a full medical check up.

But, 53 years ago, if Wolstenholme and Co had dared “think it’s all over” for either player, then they would have been mistaken as both McParland and Wood were to play on, with Villa’s outside left making the most significant contribution.

Wood returned carrying a cloth with smelling salts on 33 minutes and was dispatched to the right wing where he lasted until half time before again departing the field and then returning between the sticks for the closing stages.

McParland, meanwhile, did further damage to United midway through the second half when he scored the double which was to win Villa their first FA Cup since 1920 and their last for more than half a century.

The Northern Ireland international himself describes both goals elsewhere on this page, so it requires no further explanation, other than to say the modus operandi was the getting it forward, getting it out wide and getting in crosses approach that McParland’s compatriot Martin O’Neill favours today.

Villa’s goals came on 68 and 73 minutes after Matt Busby’s men struggled to adjust to playing with ten men for much of the match and with key players out of position.

Both teams, as was the fashion in Fifties football, favoured the W or 2 3 5 formation; Villa, decked out in blue jerseys with claret stripes, white shorts and claret and blue socks, had Nigel Sims in goal behind right and left backs Stan Lynn and Peter Aldis.

Then there were right, centre and left halves, Stan Crowther, Jimmy Dugdale and Pat Saward and the midfield/forward line of outside right Les Smith, inside right Jackie Sewell, centre forward Bill Myerscough, inside left Dixon, and outside eft McParland.

United, kitted out in an all white strip with red trim, boasted Duncan Edwards, Jackie Blanchflower, who ended up deputising in goal, and Bobby Charlton in their side, although an 83rd minute consolation was all they had to show for their efforts.

However, Villa, who had beaten Luton, Middlesbrough, Bristol City, Burnley and West Bromwich Albion on the road to Wembley, celebrated a historic victory which will live long in the memory.

McParland, Sims, Crowther, Saward and Sewell the five surviving members of the 57 Cup winning team will be hoping history can finally repeat itself and Aston Villa can go all the way again this year.

Aston Villa (2 3 5): Sims; Lynn, Aldis; Crowther, Dugdale, Saward; Smith, Sewell, Myerscough, Dixon, McParland.

Manchester United (2 3 5): Wood; Foulkes, Byrne; Colman, Blanchflower, Edwards; Berry, Whelan, Taylor, Charlton, Pegg.

Scorers: Villa: McParland 68, 73; United: Taylor 83. Star Man Peter McParland

SEVEN was a lucky number for Aston Villa and Peter McParland in 1957.

For not only did the club claim their seventh triumph in the competition, but talisman McParland hit seven goals along the way.

McParland’s scoring streak started in the 2 2 third round draw at Luton and he notched in the 1 1 fifth round draw at Burnley and in the 2 0 replay win.

Arizona Cardinals open season with home win over New Orleans Saints

In beating the Saints31 19, the Cardinals provided both cynics and optimists enough evidence to make strong arguments about the team’s fortunes this season.

What’s inarguable is the Cardinals are 1 0.

“It’s always nice to get a victory and have a lot of things to work on,” coach Bruce Arians said.

BOX SCORE: Cardinals 31, Saints 19

Things such as not allowing opposing running backs to gain 148 yards receiving, wholesale jerseys or going scoreless in four possessions during the heart of the game.

But there were positive signs, too. Things such as yielding one touchdown to a team with an offense perennially among the league’s best, and scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one by a tight end in his second year and another by a running back in his first.

Cardinals vs. Saints rewind: What we learnedWhat we learned in Cardinals’ win vs. SaintsThe Cardinals opened the game as if they were going to do just that. They drove 80 and 88 yards for touchdowns in the first half and led14 3with 11 minutes remaining.

But the offense then stalled, and the Saints, behind quarterback Drew Brees, started moving. It seemed every time the Cardinals blitzed,http://www.vondutchwatches.com/nfl10291.php Brees made them pay by throwing a screen or swing pass to a running back in the spot vacated by the blitzer.

“One of the things we saw others have success with a year ago was misdirection,” said Saints coach Sean Payton. “It is a pressure defense, they do a good job of getting after the quarterback. We felt like we couldn’t sit back there and allow that pass rush to rush five. We needed something to counter.”Cardinals think Andre Ellington suffered PCL injury

Running backs Mark Ingram (8 receptions, 98 yards) and Khiry Robinson (5 receptions, 51 yards) were the counters. While they hurt the Cardinals with short receptions and long runs, the Saints reached the end zone just once.

“That’s the plan,” said Cardinalssafety Rashad Johnson, who intercepted a pass. “Last year, that’s what made us be an 11 win team. Teams go in the red zone and when they go there, we kept them out of the end zone. We thrive off that.”

Because they were scoring field goals instead of touchdowns, the Saints were never able to take the lead. They closed to within one point early in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals responded with an 80 yard drive.

Quarterback Carson Palmer, who completed 19 of 32 passes for 307 yards, threw one of his three touchdowns passes, a 17 yarder, to tight end Darren Fells.

That gave the Cardinals an 8 point lead with 9:48 left.

Arizona State University frat suspended for racism after MLK Day party with gang signs and watermelon cups

PHOENIX An Arizona State University fraternity’s operations have been suspended following accusations that the local Tau Kappa Epsilon chapter hosted a distasteful party in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, replete with racist stereotypes and offensive costumes.

University officials planned to meet Tuesday with fraternity representatives regarding the off campus party over the weekend.

“We regard the behavior exhibited as completely outrageous, extraordinarily offensive and wholly unacceptable,” said James Rund, Cheap Jerseys china ASU’s senior vice president for Educational Outreach and Student Services. “This kind of behavior is not tolerated by the university, and we intend to take swift and immediate action.

“We just don’t have room at the university to tolerate that kind of conduct.”

Alex Baker, a spokesman for the national fraternity organization, said the group does not condone racist or discriminatory behavior.

“It is with embarrassment and regret when a few individuals within our organization make decisions that do not align with the values and principles of Tau Kappa Epsilon,” Baker said in a statement.

Pictures from the party made their way onto social media websites, depicting guests dressed in basketball jerseys,http://www.big49erssanfrancisco.com flashing gang signs and holding watermelon shaped cups.

“How can you not realize how stupid this is?” said Cuyler Meade, 25, an ASU junior. “It’s embarrassing if people look at ASU and think we’re all like that.”

The Rev. Jarrett Maupin, an Arizona civil rights activist, said the party antics were outrageous and offensive. He is calling on the school to expel all students involved and permanently ban the fraternity from affiliation with ASU.

“It was just a raucous, racist rally, and they used Dr. King’s holiday as a mask for racial villainy and harassment,” Maupin said Tuesday.

Activists at an afternoon news conference also called on the university to require that all staff and students take diversity classes.

The Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity was already on probation for an off campus fight in 2012, according to ASU. The university did not provide additional details of the incident or disciplinary action.

Founded in 1899 at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill., the fraternity has about 257,000 members at 291 chapters and colonies across the United States and Canada, according to its website.

In 2012, the University of Arizona stripped its local chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon of recognition after an investigation showed multiple instances of dangerous hazing.

West Albany High School

We at Oregonlive would like to thank coach Randy Nyquist, the West Albany assistant coaches, the players and everyone else involved for being so co operative with us today. We will be coming to you later today from West Salem practice. We don’t have a sure time yet, but keep checking and we’ll update as soon as we have that info.

The hats have come off and the players are meeting at center field, which must mean the morning session is coming to an end.wholesale nfl jerseys The coaching staff goes over the positives and negatives they saw today, and what they can do to address them in the next round of practice, later in the day.

The team has just circled up at mid field to begin a their push up regimen, followed by a sprint around the goal post. Now on to every football players favorite exercise, ‘up downs’.

We have retreated to the car now, as the rain is pouring down here in Albany. Through the windshield wipers I can see the varsity squad working on their team offense/defense, with coach Nyquist manning the QB spot.

Wide receiver Drew Pigg just went horizontal to catch a big pass up the middle. he is expected to be one of the key components of the ‘Dogs offense this season.

Defensive coach Jim Phillips is lecturing his defense on the art containment, after giving up a big run to McHenry, one of the leagues top rushers last year.

Big tackle in the backfield by Neil Crook, who was honored as the 5a defensive player of the year last season.

While talking with Nyquist, I asked him about the QB question facing his team. With the loss of Haberly, WAHS is going to need one of their youngsters to step up and perform for them to get back to the 5a state championship game. When asked, Nyquist said, “Well I think we’re gonna go with Miller, but that isn’t set in stone.” I think the coach just want to see how practices progress over the rest of the month before making a final decision.

I just got done touching bases with coach Nyquist out here on the practice field. He seemed pretty happy to have us there, and he said he would be glad to sit down with me and talk after practice, so keep an eye out for that interview which should come after practice wraps up here.

Andre Roberson sits out the Thunder loss in Memphis with the flu

Kevin Durant, the star attraction, missed Monday’s night’s game in Memphis as expected. But he wasn’t the only Thunder starter who sat out.

Shooting guard Andre Roberson woke up with the flu on Monday morning and never felt well enough to play.

“We were gonna wait to see how he responded throughout the day and he got a little bit better, but not in a condition to play,” coach Billy Donovan said pregame. “He (didn’t) eat all day. Unfortunate.”

In his place, Donovan started Kyle Singler, saying he wanted length on the floor to combat with Grizzlies starting small forward Jeff Green.

Roberson is considered day to day.

With just a short one game trip up the road, Durant joined the Thunder in Memphis on Monday night. Cheap Jerseys free shipping KD went through a light but long pregame workout. OKC’s trainers took him through a series of stretching and balancing exercises. Then he did some dribbling for about five minutes followed by stand still shooting.

Durant strained his left hamstring last Tuesday. His MRI came the following day with an announcement from the team he’d be reevaluated in 7 10 days. That seventh day comes on Wednesday.

“He’ll probably go back to the doctors and they’ll take another look at him, probably do an MRI,” Donovan said. “He can move around and do things (right now), pain tolerable. So he’s fine shooting the basketball.”

For the first time in his rookie season, Cameron Payne was given meaningful rotation minutes. Augustin, OKC’s other backup point guard, late in the first quarter.

Playing some point and some off the ball, Payne looked a bit jittery in his seven first half minutes, giving up an and 1 and committing a silly late clock foul.

But he rebounded in the second half, nailing a huge buzzer beater at the end of the third quarter to give the Thunder the lead heading to the fourth. Payne was mobbed by a fired up Russell Westbrook after the shot.

The rookie’s minutes likely came as a result of Roberson’s absence and the need for another perimeter option.

In the first four minutes of Sunday night’s loss to the Celtics, Westbrook nailed his first two 3s. With growing confidence, he fired up eight more throughout the night. He missed all eight.

It was the eighth time in his career Westbrook has taken 10 or more 3s. The Thunder has lost all eight games.

Donovan didn’t seem to mind the shot selection against the Celtics, though.

“The 3 point shots that I struggle with Russell are the ones where he’s really off balance,” Donovan said. “I can’t sit here and say, the 3s where they went under the screen, he had his legs under him. He went straight up and down.http://www.cheapjerseysshow.com I thought he had good rhythm shooting the basketball. Didn’t look like he was laboring, didn’t see any hands in his face.

“So the threes that he took, for the most part, his man kinda went under. Those are the shots that he has to shoot comfortable with his legs under him. And I talked to him before the year started, looking at film, he’s a really good shooter when he’s squared up and going up and down. Then he’s not as good as he can be when he’s off balance. I didn’t notice him taking a lot of off balance 3s.”

On Monday night, Westbrook came up firing again from deep. And he got hot, nailing five of his eight 3 point attempts.

In honor of the Memphis Sounds, a former ABA team, the Grizzlies rocked red “Hardwood Classic” Sounds jerseys on Monday night.

It was a bit of a strange on court look, considering what Thunder fans have gotten used to when seeing this version of the Grizzlies on the court. But the red threads seemed to go over well with spectators.

From here, the Thunder returns home in desperate need of a win to get back on track. Awaiting them is Anthony Davis and the injury riddled, struggling New Orleans Pelicans. Entering Monday, the Pelicans had a 1 9 record, worst in the Western Conference. They’ll be on the second night of a back to back, after facing the Nuggets at home on Tuesday night.

Are Republicans angry

The Republican National Convention hit Ohio last week, with Donald Trump officially taking his place as the party’s nominee for president. One notable characteristic of the gathering: Anger.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie helped lead cheers of, “Lock her up,” in a speech describing the supposed crimes of Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee. And Tuesday night supposedly devoted to the economy was instead devoted to a line of speakers listing non economic grievances against Clinton.

Yeah, that’s kind of crazy.Cheap Jerseys free shipping Bush I’ve argued was probably the worst president in living memory. He started a disastrous, unnecessary war in Iraq. He led the nation when the economy collapsed into the Great Recession. He ran a 2004 campaign based on denying gay Americans the right to marriage. And he probably could’ve been a bit more proactive in preventing the attacks of 9/11.

Bush was just a disaster. But he’s still preferable to what we’ve seen on stage at the Republican National Convention this week.

Bush, for all his many faults, seemed to possess a bit of human decency that’s pretty much missing from the GOP’s incarnation under Trump. Bush, after all, tried to figure out a way to resolve the immigration issue sensibly knowing that any realistic solution won’t involve the deportation of millions of migrants living here already. Bush, after all, tried to expand the GOP appeal beyond its base of old white people, appealing to Hispanics and openly breaking with the racist “Southern strategy” used by earlier generations of Republican politicians. aid to Africa to help stem the tide of AIDS there.

The GOP under Trump, though, doesn’t much like immigrants. It has open antipathy toward the Black Lives Matter movement. And where the conventions under Bush seemed to be of the “happy warrior” stripe remember Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 2004 appearance in New York? this convention has been sour and cranky.

This is no surprise. Republican voters have been primed for decades by Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and websites like Breitbart, all of which are mad as hell and not taking it anymore, good times or bad. Trump is the perfect candidate for such voters. Given his general ideological incoherence his position on key issues is often slippery at best it’s natural to assume that anger is pretty much the main feature unifying what’s left of the Republican Party these days.

It’s enough to make you miss Bush.

BEN BOYCHUK

If your political party just nominated Trump, wouldn’t you be angry, too? Anger follows denial in the five stages of grief, after all.

Too many Republicans simply refused to believe that Trump would be the party’s standard bearer. As recently as Monday, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol,www.cheapjerseys13.com the man who had stepped up to lead the doomed Never Trump insurgency, was pleading on Twitter for somebody like failed 2012 GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney to announce an 11th hour independent bid in hopes of derailing the Trump train.

It’s sad to see wishful thinking replace prudence. Politics is supposed to be the art of the possible.

For example, it’s possible that the anger we’ve been hearing from the dais at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland is serving a larger political purpose. What were Chris Christie and Rudy Giuliani shouting about, anyway? Ron Fournier writing at The Atlantic on Wednesday argued that Republicans aren’t using the convention to make the case for Trump so much as they’re making the case against Clinton.

Christie’s, “Lock her up,” refrain wasn’t intended to make listeners pause and reflect, any more than Giuliani’s passionate defense of the police on Monday night was about anything Trump will do if he’s elected. The point is to sow the seeds of doubt.

Because, apart from being widely disliked and distrusted by many voters, Clinton almost certainly mishandled classified information in violation of federal law. She’s utterly in thrall of the Black Lives Matter movement, which until about a week ago had no problem with its speakers advocating violence against police. And the FBI is still looking into the activities of her family’s foundation, especially its foreign donors.

Republicans’ anger this week seems to be about squandered opportunities. After eight years of inept administration, diplomatic embarrassment abroad and middling economic growth at home, the GOP should have been able to beat any candidate the Democrats put up. The fact that Trump was the best the Party of Lincoln could muster with this year is sad and infuriating.

West Brom match special for Timbers’ Johnson

Major League Soccer requires its clubs to open their locker rooms to the media after league matches. Evidently, after a non MLS match, all bets are off.

After the Timbers’ 3 2 loss to West Bromwich Albion FC on Wednesday night at Jeld Wen Field, the locker room was closed. Of the 16 Timbers players who competed in the match,Cheap Jerseys free shipping only Eddie Johnson and Peter Lowry came out to talk with the media.

If Johnson’s health does return, it will mean that Wednesday night really was a lifelong highlight for him. The striker, who hails from Chester, England, is Portland’s only English player.

‘My dream was to play in the Premier League,’ he said. ‘But the next best thing is playing in a top league over here.’

In the 26th minute, Johnson took a pass from Darlington Nagbe and created a story he can tell everyone across the pond. He sent in a 15 yard shot for the Timbers’ first goal.

‘It was pretty nice,’ he said. ‘I can tell all my friends that back in England. They’ll enjoy that one.’

The match reunited Johnson with an old friend, West Brom defender Billy Jones. They played together at Crewe Alexandra in the English Championship from 2005 06.

After the match, Johnson and Jones exchanged jerseys.

‘It was nice to see him. He played well, and I wish him good luck this year,’ Johnson said.

Lowry played his first full 90 minutes since the Timbers’ second match of the season against Toronto FC. Since then, the midfielder has been battling to recover from a left knee sprain that has kept him out of Portland’s last 16 MLS matches.

‘When you’re away from it a little bit, you get a little hungry to get back out on the field and make your mark,’ Lowry said. ‘Certainly it’s tough to sit and watch up in the stands, and I’m hungry to get back out on the field (in MLS matches) and help this team. I showed a little bit tonight.’

That is an understatement. In the 29th minute, Lowry hit one of the most ferocious 20 yard left footed strikes you will see at any level of soccer to put the Timbers up 2 0.

Health wise, Lowry said he felt good on the pitch against West Bromwich.

‘This was the first 90 I’ve done in a long, long time,’ he said. ‘So I feel good. I’ve been doing a lot of work with these guys and behind the scenes and definitely coming out here and getting match fitness feels pretty good.’

After defender Eric Brunner subbed out in the second half, Lowry wore the captain’s armband.

‘I felt like I had a pretty good first half and was trying to help lead some of the guys,’ Lowry said. ‘We’ve got a lot of young guys out there, and it just got passed on to me. I was trying to help us.’

Lowry did joke that the Timbers wasting a 2 0 lead did not reflect very well on him as a captain.

‘It’s unfortunate that I got the armband and we end up losing 3 2,’ he said, smiling a bit. ‘I guess that doesn’t really reflect well on me.’

Wearing the armband was special, though.

‘It was kind of neat,’ Lowry said.

The Timbers’ starting lineup against West Brom could hardly be called a reserve squad. It featured nine players who have started MLS matches this season.

Spencer said that the players with the potential to play Saturday against the Crew were used wisely enough that they will still be available.

‘We managed the game well for them,’ Spencer said. ‘If you can’t play two games in a week when you’re 21 years old, then you’ve got problems. Really.’

A lot has been made about artificial turf, like the surface at Jeld Wen Field, being bad for soccer players. It concerned West Brom coach Roy Hodgson enough that he decided to keep three of his players out of the match.

‘There are players that, when they get to the end of their career, if they do have serious knee injuries, it is a hard surface, it’s an unforgiving surface,’ Hodgson said.
